Show Compassion Will You?

I know that I haven’t written any blogs in a while, but now I am playing catch up. I meant to write this a few weeks ago, but life was so busy I forgot to. So, here I am today just sharing what has been on my heart lately.

A few weeks ago, I was in my room reading my Bible before my mom and I left to go shopping. As I was sitting there on my bed, I happened to flip over to Luke chapter 7. There were so many things that really stood out in that whole passage, it blew me away. But, what amazed me the most was the compassion Jesus Christ showed toward others. In Luke 7:11-17, it talks about this widow who lost her son. As her son (her only son) was being carried out in his casket, the widow began weeping and a large crowd was with her. Jesus saw what was going on and Luke 7:13-15 says, “When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.” Jesus saw the pain and hurt the mother was in, and He was moved with compassion. What does compassion mean? According to Webster Dictionary, compassion means: deep sympathy. Jesus had deep sympathy for the widow.

Or what about the woman who was a sinner and washed Jesus’ feet with extravagant oil? Jesus showed great compassion toward her. Luke 7:36-50 talks about how Simon (a Pharisee) asked Jesus over to his house to eat. When Jesus was over at Simon’s place, it says in verse 37-38, “And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.” This passage goes on to say how Simon, a Pharisee-a religious person, chastised the woman and couldn’t believe that a so called “Prophet” would allow a sinner of all people, to touch His feet. However, I love what Jesus said. He didn’t just stand there and let Simon put both of them down. As Jesus turned toward the woman, He told Simon, ““Do you see this woman? I entered into your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”” Luke 7:44-48 [NKJV]. Jesus saw the heart of the woman and had compassion toward her. He saw her intentions which were pure, not trying to gain anything from her actions.

It amazes me how compassionate Jesus is, yet it is hard to find Christians these days who are. I mean think about it, Jesus had compassion on you too, to the point He went to the cross for your sins and shame. He bore your sins so that you could have a relationship with God and spend eternity with Him. Jesus took on your guilt on the cross, so you can be presented faultless before God when you see Him face to face. How mind blowing is that?

I know we are all human, and there is no perfect person (or Christian). Please know I am not here to bash Christianity because I too, believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. However, I have seen so often “Christians” act religious and treat others just like the way Simon treated the woman who washed Jesus’ feet. I have seen “Christians” who say things because they feel like it’s the right thing to say, but not do what they say they are going to do. I have seen “Christians” not show compassion toward others, rather they are stuck on themselves. Jesus wasn’t focused on Himself, He was focused on others. He didn’t make life all about Him, but rather about His Heavenly Father. As Christians, we are ambassadors of Christ…why then is hard to find “Christians” who are compassionate like Him?

I want to challenge you today to go beyond yourself and reach out to others. Show compassion. Everyone has a story, and you never know what someone else may be going through. And, if you are going to profess to be a Christ follower but then don’t act like Christ…you make Christ lose all credibility to outsiders looking in. I want to challenge you to pray and ask God to show you how you can be blessing to others, not so you can gain something from it…but to truly show the love of God to others. Don’t be like those “Christians” who just give lip service but no actions follow. Religion is mere talk. Christianity isn’t religion, but relationship. Show others the difference. Show compassion will you?

Tormentors Have No Hold On You

Sunday morning before leaving the house to go to church, I was sitting at the kitchen table sipping on coffee and reading the Bible on my phone. While waiting for my parents to finish getting ready for church, I had time to read Psalm 56. As I was reading the passage, I noticed that Psalm 56 was titled “Prayer for Relief from Tormentors.” In case you are wondering what translation I read, I read from the NKJV. When reading Psalm 56, it made me realize just how applicable this passage is today.

“Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up, fighting all day he oppresses me. My enemies would hound me all day, for there are many who fight against me, O Most High. Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in God (I will praise His word), in God I have put my trust, I will not fear. What can flesh do to me? All day they twist my words; all their thoughts are against me for evil. They gather together, they hide, they mark my steps, when they lie in wait for my life…In God (I will praise His word), in the Lord (I will praise His word), in God I have put my trust, I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” Psalm 56:1-6, 10-11 [NKJV]

King David was crying out to God, asking Him to deliver him from his tormentors. Even though there were people after David and they wanted to take his life, he remained confident in the Lord. When reading this passage, it reminded me of bullying. Do not bullies hound their victims all day, twist their words, think evil toward the victim, mark their steps, and gather together? If you are dealing with bullying, I believe you can learn something valuable from this passage. Or, if you are dealing with difficult people in your life, maybe you can benefit from this too.

Regardless of what the people were doing, saying, or planning to do toward David, he kept his faith in God. Even though the circumstances around him appeared overwhelming, David kept an attitude of praise and trust. David praised God’s word.

Often times, it is easy to talk about the problem. And yes, when bullying occurs it is good to talk about it. But, have faith and trust in the Lord. David trusted that God would bring him through. Do you trust God to bring you through too? I have heard the saying that when a door closes, continue to praise God in the hallway until the right door opens. I believe the same thing should happen even when life isn’t too peachy. Praise God and thank Him that you can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. Praise Him and read His word…get to know what God says about you. What God says about you is far more valuable and precious than what bullies say about you.

David kept his focus on God. In the good times and the bad times, David praised God and kept his focus on Him. Are you praising God in the good and the bad times? Are you keeping your focus on Him? I know that this is easier said than done, believe me, I know. It is so easy to get caught up in the moment and focus on the problem, rather than focusing on God. However, overtime, I learned that I don’t need to tell God how big my problems are but to tell my problems how big my God is. Don’t think one moment that God doesn’t care or has time for you. He shows no partiality. Whatever you are facing, He wants you to know that He is there for you every step of the way and to call out to Him. He wants to hear from you and trust in Him. What does trust mean? According to Webster Dictionary, trust means: firm belief in the honesty, reliability, etc. of another; faith; confident expectation. People fail all the time and it can be so hard to trust people. However, isn’t it reassuring to know that God will NEVER fail us? We can trust on the reliability of God. Why? Because He is the Creator. He created you and has a purpose for you according to Jeremiah 29:11. He has wonderfully and fearfully made you according to Psalm 139. He has sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for your sins. Why would you not want to trust Him?

Whatever you are facing today, remember to be like King David. Regardless what you are going through, praise God and trust in Him. When people go after you, twist your words, mark your steps, or gather together to plot against you…remember, God is greater. Keep your focus on Him because tormentors have no hold on you!

Bullied Yet Victorious

Have you heard about the book “Bullied Yet Victorious” or have you seen the commercial? There are many people who do not know that I have written a book. I would like to use this opportunity to share the reason and purpose I wrote, “Bullied Yet Victorious: How I Overcame Fear with Faith.” But, first I would like to tell you that this Saturday, February 22nd, I will be having my first book signing event at Firewheel Coffee in Garland, TX, from 1:00-3:00PM.

In the summer of 2011, before I started my junior year in college, I was sitting in my room thinking about the bazar bullying incidents I endured growing up. As I sat there recalling what occurred, I grabbed my computer and began to type away. I began writing the incidents as if I were talking to someone and within a few days, I finished my book. I read it to my mom and she recommended I get it published. In my junior year, I was on the search for a publisher to accept my manuscript. I knew what I wrote would encourage the reader. I knew that I had been given this book for a reason. As the search continued, I began to get discouraged because publishers were not accepting solicited manuscripts. I was disappointed because I knew this was a dream God had given me, yet I wasn’t seeing doors opening.

In the summer of 2012, I received an unexpected email from a representative at a Christian publishing company. The rep requested that I send him my manuscript and notified me that within a few weeks, they would inform me of their decision. It was less than a week when I received an answer…”Congratulations, we would be honored to publish your book.” I was ecstatic! I couldn’t believe it! Finally, someone was interested in my story! I was stepping closer to the dream God had given me.

In the summer of 2013, my book was nationally released-on July 23rd, to be exact. The first challenge I faced was finding a publisher. The second challenge I am facing is spreading the word-getting the word out about the book. I didn’t realize how tough it would be! However, I choose to believe that every day is a step closer to fulfilling the dream God has given me. Whatever challenge that arises, it just makes us stronger! God’s timing is ALWAYS perfect! We may not understand it, we may not see things happen right away, but we have to trust in His PERFECT timing.

If you are wondering what my dream is, I will tell you. I was bullied all throughout my life. When people see me, they have a hard time believing it because they say, “You don’t look like a bullied victim, you look like the popular girl at school” or “Why should people listen to you? You look like someone who has been raised with a silver spoon in your mouth.” Both statements are false and judgmental. I didn’t realize that to be a victim, you have to have a “look.” I am not a rich person, my parents never raised me with a “silver spoon in my mouth.”  Sadly, the bullying took place in the Christian environment-Christian schools and church. I was a straight ‘A’ student, athlete, involved in extracurricular activities, and involved in church; yet, I was bullied. However, I love what Romans 8:28 [NKJV] says, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” What the enemy meant for harm, God turned around for my good.

Bullying hurts. Bullying is real and it can happen to anyone. I am living proof of that. However, I learned that it doesn’t matter what bullies say about me. What matters is what GOD says about me. In the Bible, He says I am blessed, overcomer, worthy, beautiful, smart, priceless, and victorious. There is truly hope in the Lord. I wouldn’t have not been able to face bullying if it were not for relying on the Word of God and realizing I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength according to Philippians 4:13.

I wrote “Bullied Yet Victorious” to encourage teens who have faced bullying or dealing with bullying. I share my personal encounters starting in the second grade (I was bullied by my teacher/principal) all the way to college (I felt like I was living in a movie my freshmen year of college). I encourage the reader to dream big and know that God will help them through. This upcoming generation needs help and their self-esteem built. Every time I hear on the news that a teen was bullied or a teen committed suicide due to bullying, it breaks my heart. IF only someone would have helped. IF only someone would have stood up and told the victim, “Don’t give up, you have a purpose. It doesn’t matter what bullies say, they don’t define you. You are more than what they say. You are victorious. You are an overcomer and God loves you very much.”

That is my dream. That is my message. Bullies don’t determine your future, God does. Bullies come and go, but God is everlasting. Don’t let the words of bullies get you down. You have a purpose according to Jeremiah 29:11 and wonderfully made according to Psalm 139:13-16. You are a blessing!

My dream is to write more books; but, while on this journey, encourage teens they have a purpose. I believe God has given me this book as a platform to testify His goodness and uplift, encourage the broken hearted. My heart’s desire is to speak at conferences, youth groups, and churches. I  want to challenge churches to be the church…bullying should not even be happening in churches. I don’t believe that is what God intended for the church. In my opinion, bullying can hurt worse when it happens at church. I was devastated and didn’t want to go to church for a long time because I was bullied by church members my junior year of high school. I didn’t blame God for what happened, but I couldn’t believe how people who professed to be “Christians” were so mean and hateful. Bullying in the church can cause serious damage. In 1 John, John constantly mentions how we should love one another. Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and strength…and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Why then, is it hard for some “Christians” to truly show the love of God?

If you have been bullied or dealing with bullying, I want to encourage you that you are meant for so much more. You have been created for such a time as this. God has a wonderful purpose for you. You are priceless, worthy, smart, beautiful, overcomer, and you are, victorious. You are Bullied Yet Victorious.

Fear Not!

There are times in life where we face fear. Whether it is fear of failure, rejection, perfectionism, life, etc…we have all faced it. Maybe you are dealing with fear right now. Today, I want to encourage you not to be fearful. 2 Timothy 1:7 [NKJV] says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” How comforting is that?

Lately, I have noticed on my Twitter feed numerous Tweeters who have been dealing with fear. I, myself, have been overcoming fear lately too…the fear of failure and rejection. I want to share with you all that regardless what fear you are facing, you can overcome it. The enemy likes to create fear in us which causes us to stop in our tracks. It can prevent us from moving forward in the direction God has for us. FEAR means False Evidence Appearing Real. Don’t allow fear to stop you, rather keep persevering and moving forward. I read one time that the words “do not fear” is in the Bible 365 times. Do you know what that means? There are 365 days in 1 year, and each day God is saying, “Do not fear.” When we focus on Him and how much He has blessed us, there is no room to think about fear. Instead of dwelling on the fear and letting it magnify in our minds, we need to hand the Lord our concerns and trust that He will make a way. One of the greatest things we can do during tough times is to praise and honor Him, regardless of the storm we are in.

In the Bible, a great example of someone who faced fear was Peter. I am sure you probably have heard of the story of the disciples being in a boat and caught in a terrible wind storm. The winds blew, waves crashing, and they saw someone walking on water. The disciples panicked thinking it was a ghost. Jesus told the disciples to be of a good cheer because it was Him. To make sure this person walking on water was really Jesus, Peter wanted Jesus to command him out of the boat. Jesus called Peter out of the boat. Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, and when he crawled out of the boat, he was walking on water too. However, the moment he took his eyes off of Jesus, he panicked and became fearful…sinking in the water.

“Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.  But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.  But when he saw that the wind was boisterous,he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” ~Matthew 14:25-33 [NKJV]

What created fear in Peter? The winds and waves. He took his focus off of Jesus and began to focus on the fear. I can imagine Jesus being so gracious, smiling at Peter as he reached down to pull him out of the water. I believe the same thing for us, Jesus smiling and pulling us out of our situation saying, “I will help you, why do you doubt?” Fear is something everyone faces in their life, but it is what we do with it that matters. Are you going to dwell on the fear or keep your focus on Jesus?

If you are dealing with fear, replace those fearful thoughts with God’s Word. What does the Bible say about the situation? God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strength you, yes I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”  How comforting that God is for us and is with us. “Fear not, for I am with you.” God, the Creator of the Universe, is with you. Remember, you are a blessing and victorious. Fear not!

Faith in The Storm

The past couple weeks, I have not blogged due to life. However, there is a topic that has been on my heart lately that I would like to share with you. It is about having faith in the storm. I believe more people need to be encouraged that regardless of the circumstances we face, God is for us. He is always there and even when it seems quiet, God is there. He promises us in His word that He will never leave us or forsake us, Hebrews 13:5-6.

In college, I majored in Communication and Government. I find government/politics very interesting, but I cannot stand how dirty it is. Why can’t the people we elect to represent us on Capitol Hill walk out integrity, honesty, and leadership? Sometimes listening to the news can be overwhelming, to the point, I have to turn the channel. All of the nonsense that is occurring and how “We The People” are losing our freedoms, liberty, and privacy…it is scary! America is not like what it used to be and I don’t think we will ever be the same. However, this is not the point of my blog.

In spite of a shaky economy, broken healthcare system, unstable government, and financial hardships…always remember that God is with you. I love how in Psalm 37: 25-26, King David said, “I have been young and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging for bread. He is ever merciful and lends; and his descendants are blessed.” God promises that He will take care of you. Jesus said in Luke, if God cares about the sparrows, how much more of value are you to the Father? If you are concerned about your future, don’t be! I know it is easier said than done, believe me, I know. But, one of the greatest things we can do is trust and have faith that the Lord is working out all things for our good. We may not see the results we want right away; but, one thing I learned, God doesn’t operate on our time frame. God is working behind the scenes, so to speak, on your behalf. He is perfecting those things that concern you, Psalm 138:8.

If you are facing circumstances or issues that you cannot control, and you are troubled by it, God will be there to help you through. In Psalm 107, King David talked about how we should be grateful and show thanks to the Lord for His goodness. But, he also goes on to share examples of God’s goodness and mercy. A perfect example of God’s support, mercy, and grace in the time of trouble is Psalm 107:23-31. Many people are familiar with the story in the New Testament of how Jesus and his disciples were in a boat when a storm hit. The storm came, the winds blew, and the disciples were panicking asking Jesus for help. Jesus calmed the storm by saying, “Peace be still” and told the disciples, “Oh you of little faith.” However, did you know that there is a similar story mentioned in Psalm 107? I was reading Psalm 107 the other day and found this to be interesting.

“Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business on great waters, they see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. For He commands and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up the waves to the heavens, they go down again to the depths; their soul melts because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end. Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, so that its waves are still. Then they are glad because they are quiet; so He guides them to their desired haven. Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!” ~Psalm 107:23-31

The fishermen were troubled by the storm, yet they cried out to God for help. God not only calmed the storm, but He guided them to their destination. Often times in life, we face challenges that are like “storms.” We face circumstances that hit us hard and unexpectedly; the winds of life appear drastic and shake us up. Are you facing a “storm” right now? I love how in these verses you see compassion from the Lord, “…He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, so that its waves are still…He guides them to their desired haven.” God did three things: brought them out of distress, calmed the storm, and guided them to their destination.

I believe that God is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore. Just like the fishermen, I believe that God can pull you out of your distress, calm the storms of life around you, and guide you to where you need to be. However, one of the greatest things you can do is pray…pray and ask the Lord for help. Invite Him in to your circumstances and believe, trust, have faith that God will work all things out on your behalf. Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call unto Me and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” Stay focused on what God has done for you and be excited for what God has in store for you. God is a good God. He is faithful, and I know that He has a purpose for you. How do I know that? Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Have faith in the time of trouble. I have heard this quote many times, “Don’t tell God how big your problem is. Tell your problem how big your God is.” God is a great God. The same God who parted the Red Sea for Moses… is the same God who is there for you. The same God who helped David overcome a giant… is the same God who is there for you. The same God who saved Daniel’s three friends from the fiery furnace…is the same God who is there for you. The same God who loves the world so much that He gave His one and only Son to die for us and our sins…is the same God who is there for you.

Be encouraged today, to not let what is going on around you personally or in the United States to steal your joy. Don’t focus on the circumstances, rather keep your focus on the Lord and give thanks. Greater things are to come and the storm you are facing is only temporary. I believe your break through is on the way, and the sun is fixing to burst through those storm clouds.

Have Faith in The Storm!

Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014

Time flies by so fast. Time is precious. Time is something that is forever gone once it has passed. Time is seconds. Time is minutes. Time is hours. 24 hours, 1,440 minutes, and 86,400 seconds are in one day. Time is sweet. Time is bitter. Time is priceless.

Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014. In less than two days, the world will be celebrating New Year’s Day…a new journey, new beginnings, new embarks, new goals, new passions, new desires, and new accomplishments. It can also cause us to reflect on the previous year and wonder what the New Year will bring.

2013 has been a whirlwind for me, full of challenges yet full of blessings. But, without challenges, how can one’s character and faith grow? From January to May 2013, I was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, finishing my last semester of undergrad. That was it, I was forever finished with college as of May 4, 2013. I got to graduate with honors and receive my degree. Before I walked across the stage, I had my life all figured out (I am a visionary person and a planner, got to have a plan!). Or, what I assumed to be figured out. My plan was going to enjoy the summer, land a job in August, meet the Godly man God has for me by October, my book was going to be a hit (it was nationally released on July 23rd), I was going to be able to travel and speak at events by the time December rolled around. Sounds like a great plan, right? Oh, how my ways are not God’s ways. Yes, I did enjoy the summer. However, August rolled around and no job. September arrived, no job or book events. I contacted various ministries, churches, organizations regarding my book and no response. October came, no job and I didn’t even meet my Prince Charming. November passed by, no job, no book events, and no man. December rushed by and well, you can guess what did not happen. Sounds depressing, does it not? But, I can boldly and confidently say, “Thank you Lord that Your ways are not my ways. The best is yet to come!” There is a reason and season for everything. Nothing goes unnoticed by God. All the “no’s” I received encourages me that my “yes” is on its way.

During this time in my life, I learned something valuable…not to despise being in the wilderness. Yes, I am living with my parents but not ashamed to say it. I am grateful God blessed me with loving and understanding parents. There are college students who are working and living away from home, and getting married; not this girl! I was reading Deuteronomy 8 the other day and it talked about remembering the Lord in all things. Where we go in life, the houses, fame, wealth…it’s not of ourselves, but of the Lord. Remember the Lord always! The Israelites wondered for 40 years in the desert, but during that time in the wilderness, it caused them to grow and see how powerful God is. Deuteronomy 8:2-3 says, “And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.” I am not literally walking in a desert, but I do feel like I have been walking through a dry season. This season has been humbling and testing of my faith. However, the testing of our faith produces patience- James 1:2-4, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”

I don’t believe any day is a wasted day. God gives us each day and what we do with it matters. I am expecting for things to turn around. I am expecting and believing 2014 is the year where my dreams come to pass. I am believing in 2014, God will open doors that no man can close.

If you are in the same boat as me or can relate, I believe 2014 will be a wonderful year for you too. God has a purpose and plan for you. 1 Corinthians 2: 9 says, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” One of my favorite Bible verses is Philippians 1:6, “…being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

Tomorrow will be the last day of 2013. Let it be memorable! I want to encourage you to celebrate and thank the Lord for what He has done for you in 2013. Enter into the New Year with expectancy that God will fulfill your heart’s desire, open doors no man can close, bless you abundantly, provide you with opportunities, divine connections, and divine appointments. Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us…”

Instead of writing down New Year Resolutions (unattainable goals in which we fail to complete or quit by March)…write down your dreams and what you would like to see the Lord bring to pass in 2014. I am believing in 2014 for a job, speaking opportunities, book events, divine connections, divine appointments, and meeting the Godly (brown hair, blue eyed, athletically built) man God has for me;) What are you believing for?

Habukkuk 2:2-3, “Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it, because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”

Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014!

He Is My King

The Christmas season is in full swing with the hustle and bustle of traffic, shopping, bargains, food, family, parties, baking, and traditions. First, I would like to say that I cannot believe that in two days it is Christmas. Second, I cannot believe how fast December has flown by. Can you believe the first of 2014 is next week? This is all too fast for me! But, despite the fast paced holidays, this time of the month can cause great reflection, memories, and traditions that are shared among families. However, the true meaning of Christmas can become overshadowed with the stress of trying to accomplish plans made in order to make Christmas Day spectacular.

I have a Sheltie. He is 13 years old but still has a puppy’s heart. He is so adorable, especially now that he has a Christmas sweater! Every year, for 13 years, I purchase little presents so he has something to unwrap on Christmas morning. Well, this year, he found his presents early. He found the goodies, and helped himself to a bone. Unfortunately, he spoiled his surprise. Therefore, today, I managed to brave the storm and went to Pet Smart. When I say storm, I don’t mean the icy weather that is hitting the northern part of the United States. I mean the flood of cars, the horrendous traffic that DFW has, the furry of shoppers, the tension between people as they gather their last minute gifts. This goes to show how spoiled my dog is! I managed to go out into society, just to get him a bone. Actually, two bones-it was a fabulous bargain! Unfortunately, the Pet Smart that I go to is right next to a Best Buy and a grocery store. It appeared like everyone and their mother was out today. Bumper to bumper traffic, crazy drivers…there was a moment where I wanted to pull my hair. The slow pokes, the speeders, the cautious, and the cutter-offers were all out today. I wanted to ask (more like yell), “Where did you get your drivers license?” If people would just move it! Trying really hard not to get frustrated, I happened to notice the man driving the vehicle in front of me. He was alone, shaking his head, throwing up his hands, smacking his steering wheel as if he were pitching a fit in his truck. After seeing his actions, it made me wonder if he looked forward to Christmas or if he had family to celebrate with. He appeared intolerant and agitated. Of course, he could have had a blue tooth on and was caring on due to the conversation. But, it caused me to ponder and reflect. This time of year, it is easy to become stressed out rather than walking in peace, love, and joy. We become so consumed with the holidays, that I often wonder if people miss the real reason for Christmas. Preparing for the holidays can be exhausting, but I think if we focus on the real reason for Christmas, it helps to put things back into perspective.

I am a Christian and I believe that God sent His Only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for my sins. John 3:16 says, ” For God so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” The real reason my family and I celebrate Christmas is to remember the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Can you imagine the day He was born? I mean think about it, during your childhood, was there ever a gift you wanted so bad and looked so forward to, you couldn’t wait for it? You just knew that you knew you were going to receive it, but didn’t know when? That is what I imagine Israel went through. In the Bible, Isaiah prophesied the coming of a Savior who would save humanity. Matthew chapter 1 and 2 talks about the birth of Jesus.  In Matthew 1:20-23 says, “But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him [Joseph] in a dream saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Sprit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins. So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God is with us.”” But, when Jesus came, the Jews didn’t see him. They didn’t recognize him to be the Messiah. They demanded a murderer be released and Jesus sent to be executed. The injustice Christ faced literally blows my mind! Here the Jews waited for this glorious gift that they heard about for hundreds of years, and when He finally showed up- they mocked Him, betrayed Him, threw rocks at Him, spat on Him, and denied Him. He died on the cross for us, yet His own people couldn’t stand Him. Jesus was sent to earth to save us from our sins so that we may be reconciled with God and spend eternity with Him.

Yes, Christmas is about family time, serving, giving, resting, and following traditions. But, it is also about the birth of Jesus Christ. It blows my mind how people can be so offended by the name Jesus or Christ. Regardless of how you celebrate Christmas, I am thankful that the King of Kings, Prince of Peace, and Lords of Lords was born. I am so grateful that He Is My King. The clip below shows why I celebrate Christmas.

As you and your family prepare for Christmas day, I pray that you don’t miss the time spent with each other. Embrace the company, joy, grace, love, and peace…and try not to stress out!

Hope you have a wonderful and blessed Merry Christmas!

Not My Ways, but His!

I know that I have not blogged in…well, a long time! I have a couple blogs floating around in cyber space, but it is time that I pick it back up. So, today I am choosing to start blogging again. Hello world, I am back!!

This blog is about something I have faced over the past few months and something that I have learned to appreciate. For those of you who are in the same boat as me, I hope my blog encourages you. Even if you haven’t dealt with this, I still hope you find it encouraging.

The past few months have been a challenging season in my life. However, without seasons of testing, enduring, persevering…how then is character built? How is faith grown? Seven months ago I graduated from college (majored in Communication & Government) and my book “Bullied yet Victorious” was released nationally in July of 2013. Before walking the stage at graduation, I had my life planned out. Honestly, they were ambitious goals rather than reality. I am a planner and a visionary person; so, naturally, I focus way too much on the future rather than the present. My plan was to have a job by the middle of August, my book would become a successful hit, I would meet the Godly man God has for me by October, and I would be on my way to being a successful career woman. Sounds like a great plan, right?

Boy, was my plan WRONG! After graduating from college, I enjoyed the time off during the summer. I was able to regroup and relax from the hectic college schedule that I endured for four years. First of August, I began the job search process. In August, I also contacted various ministries, Christian organizations, and churches informing them about my book. I also inquired about the requirements to speak at their youth groups. Since I want to be a full time motivational speaker, I also contacted professional speakers asking them how they started speaking. My book is about the bullying experiences I went through, but how God helped me to overcome. My heart is to share with my generation and the next that bullies don’t define their future, God does. They are created for a purpose according to Jeremiah 29:11 and wonderfully made according to Psalm 139. My heart is to encourage my generation (and the next) to be leaders and be all God created them to be. We are placed on this earth for such a time as this.

Days and weeks went by with no response from media, ministries, Christian organizations, and churches. Thankfully, the speakers I contacted responded back to me and shared with me how they got started. But churches? Pastors that preached from the pulpit that it is time for young people to rise up and reach out to this generation, being bold for Christ…couldn’t even help me! I received letters from ministries that said, “That is great what the Lord is doing but we have to decline from accepting your book…” or “We are excited for what God is doing, however we cannot help you…” or “Keep up the good work. We are excited for what God is doing in your life and that you overcame bullying. Unfortunately, we did not choose you to be on our program.” There were pastors that I gave my book to, who told me they were interested; yet, when I followed up with them, they treated me like an outcast. They totally dissed me. Very Christ like don’t you think? Days of rejection or flat out no response at all was overwhelming. As far as the job search, I have applied to several positions and have kept my eyes open for leads; but, have received no response.

So, here I am today-a college grad with no job, student loans approaching, single, and my book has not taken off. Sounds like I should be depressed right now, sitting in sweats, eating a tub of ice cream, and watching television all day-sulking in the fact my plan did not come together.

But, let me tell you, through all of this I have chosen to look at the beauty of this season in my life. I don’t sit around sulking. No, I choose to continue to dream big and know God is in control of my future. The beauty in this season is realizing my plans are not God’s plans, nor are my ways His ways. For that, I am so thankful. God’s plans are way better than mine, and I am glad that my plans fell through because that means God has even greater things instore for my future. Isaiah 55:8 says, “”For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.” God knew where I was going to be at in life before I even approached this season. If anything, this has caused me to let go of what I was controlling like my desires, dreams, and plans. Rather, I had to come to that moment of realizing, “God, not my will but your will be done.” God knew all about the job search process before it even came to be. I choose to believe that I have a purpose in this life according to Jeremiah 29:11-He has given me hope, future, and a purpose. All the “no’s” I have faced just means my “yes” is on its way.

As far as being in a relationship, yeah, October has rolled through and I haven’t met my Prince Charming… yet! And you know what? That is okay by me! I have peace knowing that God’s timing is perfect. In His time, I will meet the man He has for me. I can’t put a time frame on it; but, this I know, God is working behind the scenes on my behalf. He knows exactly what I am looking for in a man, and I look forward to the first time we meet.

If you are in the same boat as me, I want to encourage you to look for the beauty in this season of your life. I have found to appreciate the rest, working out, writing my next book, and spending time with family to be beneficial. Know that God has a plan and a purpose for you. You may not know His plan, but trust that He is leading you and directing your steps. Psalm 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.” Dreams, desires, aspirations that you may be holding onto tightly, give over to the Lord and watch Him work things out on your behalf. I already have! 1 Corinthians 2:9 says, “But as it is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” All the “no’s” you may have faced, just know that your “yes” is on its way. Don’t give up, stay encouraged! You are closer to your breakthrough than you think.

God’s plans are not your plans, nor are His thoughts your thoughts. God has amazing things in store for you, the question is: will you let Him be in control? I don’t know about you, but I am excited for what the future holds because I know who holds my future.

Be a Leader, Not a Follower

When I was growing up, my dad would share with me words of wisdom, in which he called “golden nuggets.” I never knew when I was going to receive a “nugget.” In junior high, I was severely bullied. When I came home from school, I would share with my parents what occurred and how the bullies would treat me. I didn’t understand why I was being bullied because I was a straight “A” student, involved in sports, and participated in extra-curricular activities. This goes to show, anyone can be bullied. A “nugget” that my dad would share with me during that trialing time: “Be a leader, not a follower; if you have to follow, follow a leader.”

I chose to set myself apart from the crowd at school. I didn’t submit to the bullies authority, rather I chose to take the high road; unfortunately, I was still targeted. There were moments in life where I didn’t understand why my friends were going down another path or why I was treated rudely; but, my dad would always remind me, “Ashley, be a leader not a follower; if you have to follow, follow a leader.” The words my dad shared with me, I strive to live that out on a daily basis. Being a leader can be lonely on top because that is a road less traveled on. We see in today’s society how leadership and leading by example (standing out from the crowd) is severely lacking. It is time for us to change that culture trend!

Two questions I want to ask:
1. How are you leading?
2. Who are you following?

How are you leading?
This might sound like a tough question to answer, but take a moment to think about it. What are you doing in your everyday life to lead and help people? What are you doing to set yourself apart from the crowd? In high school, I applied the same principle in my life. I was involved in reaching out to the community and participated in leadership events. I was not one who followed the crowd of my peers or attended their parties where underage drinking occurred and police were called. I set standards for myself. In college, I kept the bar high and chose to lead by example. I wanted my actions to speak louder than my words because someone was always watching. Whether you know this or not, someone is always watching your behavior, actions, how you handle situations, etc. There could be young children and young adults in your life watching how you are behaving. Eventually, they may mimic what you do. This is a problem we see in Hollywood and sports…people are placed on a platform and some actors/athletes/popstars don’t care there are young people looking up to them. I want to challenge you to go the extra mile and take the high road. Set goals and standards for yourself. Be a role model that young people can truly look up to.

In May of 2013, I attended NEW (National Education for Women) Leadership Institute held by the University of Oklahoma. 30 young women and I traveled to the State Capitol where we met with female politicians. It was such an incredible experience getting to hear how these women fought their way to being Oklahoma Congresswomen and Senators. One congresswoman shared with us the tough battle she endured to get elected. As she was sharing her story, she gave each of us a rubber band. Toward the end of her story, she told us that she was stretched greatly beyond her comfort zone but God did not give her more than she could handle. The rubber band was used to illustrate that sometimes in life we have to stretch ourselves, and a great way to stretch ourselves is by going the extra mile. She told us that the “extra mile is not crowded because it is the road less traveled on.”

Don’t get caught in a traffic jam on the highway of mediocrity…go the extra mile!

Who are you following?
One time I heard that the top 5 people you surround yourself with, you become just like them. Who do you surround yourself with? Do you surround yourself with people who are positive, visionary, a leader, and goes the extra mile? Or…do you surround yourself with people who are negative, lazy, complainers, and have no goals? I encourage you to evaluate who you are following. The crowd you hang out with can either lead you down a good path or a wrong one. Romans 12:2 says “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind so that you may know the perfect, good, and acceptable will of God.” If your friends are following the world and participating in events in which you know is not good…then why follow them? Stand out from the crowd.

If there is no one personally in your life who you can follow or look up to…look for a leader or mentor. Growing up, I looked up to four people: my dad, my mom, my grandpa, and Michael Jordan. Even though I don’t know Michael Jordan personally, I admired his focus and determination to be one of the greatest NBA stars of all time. My dad had a poster of Jordan that said “Success Comes From Failure.” On the poster it shared his story how numerous times he was given the game winning shot, and even though there were times he missed…he learned from it and practiced harder. He learned from his failures and that is what made him successful. I also looked up to my grandpa because any issue I had, he would always direct me to the Bible. He would say, “Ashton, the Bible says…” I admired him for pointing me back to the Word and seeing what God says about the situation.

You may be wondering what steps you can take to set yourself apart. Well, if you are a student in school, you can set yourself apart by:

  • turning in your assignments on time
  • respecting the teacher
  • standing up for bullied victims
  • watching your words
  • edify others
  • hold the door open for others
  • ask the teacher what you can do to help
  • being honest with the coaches
  • maintaining sports etiquette on and off the field
  • respect your parents
  • showing up to class on time
  • help your friends reach their goals
  • hold Bible studies.

If you are in college or young professional, you can set yourself apart by:

  • showing respect toward those in authority
  • being honest
  • being a man/woman of character
  • turning in assignments on time
  • asking professors/boss what you can do to help even though the work has been completed
  • showing up to class/job 5 minutes early
  • show up to interviews 5 minutes early
  • push your chair in after you get up (tip: sometimes future employers look to see if you push in your chair-shows them you pay attention to detail!)
  • dress modestly
  • help others achieve their goals
  • Work hard
  • Set standards/goals for yourself

Remember, “Be a leader not a follower; if you have to follow, follow a leader.”

God Is For You

Have there been times in your life where you might feel inadequate to do something? Have you ever been told that you are not good enough to fulfill your dreams, talk to a certain someone, share your story, or achieve your goals? Well today, we are going to change that! If you have not bought into those lies, good for you! However, those of you who have listened to the voices that have put you down…listen up!

Awhile ago, I attended a conference that was a “Christian” conference. There were some powerful speakers; their message really blessed me. Then, there were some speakers who are involved in ministry that were cocky and haughty to the point they appeared unapproachable. As I sat there in my seat observing their behavior, I felt so inadequate. There were speakers that I wanted to meet because I wanted to share with them my book and ask for advice on what it was like to be a first time author/speaker. However, the way they behaved, it made me feel like I was not worthy enough to talk to them. I had thoughts like “You are not good enough to talk to those individuals.” I tried really hard to switch the negative thoughts to positive ones like, “I am important! I am a child of the Most High God. I am worthy. I am victorious. God loves me so much. I am important to Jesus.” I didn’t get to talk to any of the speakers but I learned two important lessons:

  1.  1. Actions speak louder than words.
  2. 2. We are worthy. So, I am going to break down these two points:

1. Actions Speak Louder

The conference was talking about how the Church needs to be the Church; yet, it was ironic how some of the speakers were not reflecting Jesus Christ! They contradicted the very thing they were speaking about. Please don’t get me wrong, I am not here to try and wound the Church. I am not here to bash Christianity. But, enough is enough. I am tired of seeing speakers that profess to be Christ followers to appear opposite of Christ like when they snub people in the audience, acting like they are too good to be in your presence. People (not all) in the Church need to get off their high horse and remember that it is not themselves who got them there–it was God who promoted them. In John 3:30 it says that He must increase while I must decrease. Seeing the speakers’ behavior, it made me realize that I NEVER want to be that way. It showed me to truly be Christ like, loving and approaching others. Whenever I am asked to speak someday, I don’t want to come across as them. Knowing how I felt about them, I would be devastated if people felt like they could not approach me. I would want people to approach me and ask any question. There is a saying that actions speak louder than words. It is so true. Any one can talk, but until their actions meet up with their words, it sends a whole other message. Think about this, will you show love to others today? Can you go beyond the barrier of pride and approach people? What can you do to make a difference each day?

2. We Are Worthy

After the conference, I went home and reflected on the messages; but, also on what I saw. I was disappointed in some of the people’s behavior. As I was sitting on my bed reflecting, God reminded me of Moses. When God approached Moses as the burning bush, He told Moses to go to Pharaoh and demand him to let His people go. Moses went through a moment of feeling inadequate. He was nervous about his speech, “why would Pharaoh listen to me?” he probably thought. He probably felt unworthy and nervous to talk to someone of status, let alone telling Pharaoh what to do. Yet, Moses found favor with God. God gave him the strength to talk to Pharaoh. Moses was so worthy and precious to God. He used an ordinary man to do extraordinary things. God used Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt to go to the Promise Land. Moses not only stood up to Pharaoh, but he led a multitude. How extraordinary is that!! Never think you are unworthy. You are so worthy and precious to God. God turns the ordinary into extraordinary. You are just as important to God as any pastor/speaker/minister or even the richest person on planet earth. God loves you so deeply. You are a child of God, you are victorious, you are worthy, you are blessed, you are a part of the unshakeable Kingdom, and you are redeemed.

Go this day knowing that you are worthy. You can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. Don’t think one moment you are not important because you are!
